His view was that the bride and groom are always under some pressure (may be that of a new relationship) that they hardly smile in the function. The photographer has to say a thousand 'smile please's to get one. And there is this classical problem of people closing their eyes in a photo (Flickr solution)
So here's the rule of thumb for calculating the number of photos you have to take of groups less than 20: divide the number of people by three if there's good light, and by two if the light is bad. When the photographs are developed, the first blame goes to the photographer for all the kids moving around, someone closing their eyes, or someone not smiling, or something else is out of place.
May be I took my learnings from him, and thats why I became only the secondary photographer in my close friends' marriage / engagement functions. I would agree totally with my friend, its one of the toughest jobs one can do. Apart from the professional photographer - the one that is paid to do the job, there will be dozens of self proclaimed photographers roaming around with their digicams (some with mobile phones). All of them will occupy the stage and ask the bride and groom to smile. WOW!!! And every important act (be it getting the wedding saree or tying the knot) has to be repeated possibly even in slow motion so that the stupid camera of a distant relative captures it without a shake!
Of these three instances where I played the photographer, I got to see the pictures of only two. My experience says at least 50% of the pictures are not printable for some reason. Of the remaining few, only one or two might be good framable pictures. Whether their precious moments get captured in my camera or not, I make sure I wish them a great life ahead and come back (My thoughts would read - that would have been a great picture, if only he hadn't closed his eyes... sigh!)

Its as if pupil are getting wed for photos rather then the one ment for. added to it the filament white light is always on the bride and groom. ofcourse those moments of marriage are cherished through the life time.
